Then shall you call on me, and shall go and pray to me, and I will listen to you.

Jeremiah 29:12

A number of years ago, a colleague gave me a copy of a powerful Workplace Prayer. I immediately posted it on the bulletin board above my desk and I have prayed it often. I do not know who the author is but a quick google search revealed that it is a well-loved prayer.

Workplace Prayer

Lord Jesus, as I enter this workplace,
I bring Your presence with me.
I speak Your peace, Your grace, and Your perfect order
into the atmosphere of this office.
I acknowledge your Lordship over all that will be
spoken, thought, decided, accomplished within these walls.

Lord Jesus, I thank you for the gifts you have deposited in me.
I do not take them lightly, but commit to using them
responsibly and well.
Give me a fresh supply of truth and beauty;
on which to draw as I do my job.

Anoint my creativity, my ideas, my energy so that even
my smallest task may bring You honour.
Lord, when I am confused, guide me
When I am weary, energize me.
Lord, when I am burned out
infuse me with the light of your Holy Spirit.

May the work that I do and the way that I do it, bring hope,
life, and courage, to all that I come in contact with today.
And, Oh Lord, even in this day’s most stressful moment,
May I rest in You.
In the name of Jesus, my Saviour I pray.

Amen

If we want to avoid being “Submarine Christians”, surfacing on Sundays but then going back underwater for the rest of the week, we must be willing to take our faith to work. Prayer is a great place to start. It reminds us that God is in control, even when we are at work, and that our Christ-like character and our God-given gifts and experience can have a Kingdom impact on those that we work with.

Do you have a discipline of praying for your work, for your colleagues, and for those that you serve through your job? If you do not have a consistent practice of this, perhaps this Workplace Prayer could be a starting point. Some of you already have opportunities to pray with your colleagues but if you do not, would you consider inviting others in your workplace to join you in praying for each other, for your workplace and for the needs of your colleagues?
